WHO WE ARE?

Our names are Ian and Glynn Jones from Weaverham, Cheshire. We visited a nursery school in Mandinari when we were on holiday in 1996 and found that it was in desperate need of a new building and educational resources. The generosity of the Gambia people despite their poverty inspired us to raise funds on our return to England for them to build a school.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

The need for educational resources became more obvious and the gratitude of the people who see education as a gift rather than a right encouraged us to continue with the project. Funds continued through many people's commitment and involvement and when the nursery school was established in Mandinari with furniture and equipment we realised we were able to assist other schools in the Gambia, as they too had a great need for the 'gift of education'. In 2004 the charity Shine-Africa was formally registered and our second nursery school was built in in Bundung Serrekunda. We built our third school in Saaba Badibu on the north bank of The Gambia two years later in 2006
